The Backseat Lovers
The Backseat Lovers' brand of alternative rock found a home through hard work and the power of social media. The tracks "Kilby Girl" and "Maple Syrup" racked up multi-million streams following their self-released debut album, 2019's When We Were Friends. The four-piece went on to ink a deal with Universal for their sophomore effort, 2022's Waiting to Spill. Not long afterward, When We Were Friends became something of a sleeper hit, with its singles racking up streaming numbers and the album gaining enough traction to enter the Billboard charts four years after its release.
Formed in 2018 in Provo, Utah by Joshua Harmon (vocals, guitar) and Jonas Swanson (guitar), who'd originally met in a queue for an open-mike night, the pair brought in Ethan Christensen (bass) and Juice Welch (drums) to flesh out their sound. Taking inspiration from Cage the Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, and Pinegrove, the four-piece quickly put together a batch of material before playing their first gigs, including a local battle of the bands, where they wowed the audience and judges with an impressive live set. The band issued their debut EP, Elevator Days, in mid-2018 but it was their next single, "Maple Syrup," that found its way onto American airwaves and eventually to social media, where the song racked up huge streaming figures and propelled the band onto the world stage. The following year they issued their debut album, When We Were Friends, that included "Maple Syrup" and also featured their next standout track, "Kilby Girl." Parting ways with Christensen, the group brought in new bassist KJ Ward to complete the line-up, with tours following and a handful of singles released alongside a live recording from the legendary Troubadour. The band returned to the studio in 2022 to start recording their sophomore album, this time with producer David Greenbaum (Beck, Jenny Lewis). The resulting Waiting to Spill was issued at the end of the year. In February of 2023, When We Were Friends entered the Billboard Top 200 charts in the number 199 position. The album's late-blooming chart success was driven by new listeners continuously streaming its tracks, with "Kilby Girl" accumulating hundreds of millions of streams, and other tracks from the album getting tens of millions.
