Los Dos Carnales

Los Dos Carnales is a norteño quartet known for their distinctly traditional (and self-described "primitive") take on corridos, bandas, and romanticos. While the bandmembers are devoted fans of the alternative corrido movement, they have chosen a more traditional path. Their sound melds rurally styled vocal harmonies and pared-down instrumentation: acoustic guitar, accordion, bass, and drums. Their self-released studio debut Te Lo Dije, won fans across Mexico, and their many subsequent videos (registering hundreds of millions of views) and follow-up EP Somos Arrieros on the Los Angeles-based Afinarte Music, won more listeners across Latin America and the United States. Wider acclaim and further chart attention followed in 2020 the release of their full-length, Somos Arrieros, and sophomore album, El Borracho. Hailing from San Pedro in the northeastern Mexican state of Coahuila, Los Dos Carnales is led by singer and bajo quinto guitarist Alfonso "Poncho" and accordionist and harmony singer Imanol Quezada with bassist Armando Hernández and drummer Kevin Montemayor. Initially, Poncho and Imanol Quezada began as a duo. They had been playing music since they were children, but Poncho, the eldest by six years, established himself early on as a ten-string guitar stylist and singer in several other local groups. He enlisted his accordion-playing younger brother as a songwriting partner and harmony singer to create their own act. The duo honed their craft playing truck plazas in nearby Torreon and issuing videos to social media. Garnering a positive response, they doubled down on traditional norteño and added a rhythm section. They played local gigs and street festivals, eventually winning an opening slot for La Trakalosa de Monterrey in 2017. It went so well that they got an agent and began opening for touring artists in Coahuila. In 2018, Los Dos Carnales issued their debut single, "Puro Dos," to digital and social media. They followed it with the self-issued full-length Te Lo Dije. Its title track offered a collaboration with famed Uruguayan songwriter Luciano Diaz. The album caught the attention of El Fantasma (Mexican regional singer and songwriter Alexander Garcia). He sent them an Instagram message saying he wanted to collaborate with them to re-record their corrido "El Envidioso." He also evangelized the group to his label, Afinarte Music. They signed the quartet based on his word, their music, and their growing video and streaming successes. After releasing the live En Vivo con Banda y Norteno to close out the year, the label put the band on the road for En Vivo Desde Las Cañas. It massive attention across social media networks in early 2019. Los Dos Carnales returned to the recording studio and released the EP Dio Vuelta la Monedat a few months later. It included the tribute song "El Corrido de El Fantasma" as a thank you to their champion. Since then, Los Dos Carnales has recorded some of El Fantasma's songs and performed concerts with him. As the band's videos continued to register millions and millions of views, Afinarte Music put them right back into the studio. The eight-song Somos Arrieros was issued in late 2019 to universal critical acclaim, noting the band's stubborn adherence to traditional forms even as the innovative alternative corrido movement claimed all the chart attention. It also featured an appearance by El Fantasma on the set's hit streaming single "Vida Ventajos." Late in the year and early in 2020, Los Dos Carnales toured Mexico and the Southwestern United States. They left the road just before the COVID-19 pandemic. The quartet returned to the studio and emerged with the full-length Al Estilo Rancheron in July. It marked their first-ever chart entry, debuting at number two on the Mexican Regional Albums chart. Its lead single, "El Envidioso," peaked at number five on the airplay charts and topped the list at several streaming services. By the end of the year, they had released a second full-length, El Borracho, which cracked the Top Five of the Latin heatseekers chart.
