Kaia Kater

Kaia Kater, born in September 1993 in Montreal, Quebec, is a Grenadian-Canadian singer-songwriter renowned for her mastery of the banjo, guitar, and piano. Growing up in Mile End, Montreal, Kaia Kater began playing the banjo at 12, eventually moving to Elkins, West Virginia, on a banjo scholarship where she also learned flatfoot dancing and hambone. Her music career started early, recording her first EP Old Soul at 17, inspired by storytelling in music. Kaia Kater’s unique blend of indie folk, Americana, and old-time music, coupled with her exploration of themes like poverty, racism, and her Afro-Caribbean roots, has earned critical acclaim. Her third album, Nine Pin (2016), won the "Pushing the Boundaries" award at the 12th Canadian Folk Music Awards. Grenades, her 2018 album, delves into her father's journey from Grenada to Canada, reflecting her deep engagement with her personal and cultural history. Influenced by Nina Simone, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill, Kaia Kater has shaped her artistic expression to fuse folk traditions with contemporary social and political issues.
