Flavour

Flavour -- sometimes known as Flavour N'abania -- is a Nigerian singer/songwriter who rose to international fame in 2010 thanks to breakout singles like "Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix)" and "Oyi (Remix)" from his second album, Uplifted. Over subsequent releases like 2014's Thankful and 2017's Ijele the Traveler, his mix of highlife and Afro-beat, usually sung in his native Igbo tongue, continued to yield hits, making him a popular draw throughout Africa. Born Chinedu Okoli in Enugu, Nigeria, Flavour is a multi-instrumentalist who got his start playing drums in a local church choir. By his late teens, he was working as a professional drummer and had taught himself piano as well. His emergence into the Enugu scene put him in touch with several local producers, who mentored him in production and arrangement as he began his move from sideman to the front of the stage. Using his stage name Flavour N'abania, he released his debut album, N'abania, in 2005. A bright fusion of Igbo highlife and Afro-beat, the record was a modest success and featured the first appearance of his song "Nwa Baby." Five years later, "Nwa Baby" was remixed and included on Flavour's second album, Uplifted, which became a major hit throughout Nigeria and many parts of Africa. Now signed to 2nite Entertainment, Uplifted benefited from a boost in visibility thanks to guests like Jay Dey and Oloye as well as Flavour's experimentation with genres like calypso, reggae, R&B, and hip-hop. His third album, 2012's Blessed, doubled down on the collaborations and was made with numerous different producers and guest artists like Masterkraft and Fally Ipupa. Two years later, the lengthy, 22-song Thankful reunited him with many of the same producers and continued his success throughout Africa. Ijele the Traveler appeared as a surprise album in 2017 and contained another hit in "Baby Na Yoka." Divine, a collaborative EP with blind Liberian singer Semah, appeared the following year, and in 2019 he worked with Otigba Agulu on the EP Ubi Ego.
