A kind of muscular hybrid of Faith No More and Meshuggah, U.K. band Fellsilent are on the extreme tail end of prog-metal experimentation. While melody figures heavily into their sound, particularly in the sung choruses, the basic skeleton is an imposing, high-gloss set of polyrhythmic tempos and machine-precise riffs. While there’s too much color and feeling here to simply label THE HIDDEN WORDS “math metal,” the calculus of its song structure is certainly daunting. “Drowned in My Enemy” goes from drill press clattering to chiming, gentle guitars, and “Silence is the Loudest Cry for Help” stabs with force and purpose.
