Sage niemand, dass es an der amerikanischen Westküste keine interessanten Jazzer gebe. Doch im Gegensatz zu dem großmäuligen Hünen Kamasi Washington ist Sam Gendel ein schlacksiger weißer Hipster. Was der nun auf seinem Nonesuch-Debüt „Satin Doll“ präsentiert, ist ein aberwitziges Konglomerat einer Handvoll legendärer Jazzklassiker in unerhört radikaler Neudeutung. Wozu passt, dass seine ansonsten höchst uninformative Website verkündet, alles sei „ohne Mikrophone aufgenommen“ worden. Da fragt man sich schon, wie das bei einem Saxofon möglich sein soll, findet aber auch bei genauer Analyse einiger Session-Fotos keine befriedigende Antwort.
Nach Gebläse klingt nämlich nur partiell, was Sam Gendel aus seinem Instrument an verrückten Sounds holt. Andere verwursten Standards, er jagt sie zu blubbernden E-Bass-Fundamenten von Gabe Noel und rein elektronisch erzeugten Beats des Perkussionisten Philippe Melanson durch den Shredder. Immerhin erkennt man in den zu psychedelischem Charme zerfetzten Fragmenten des Openers sofort Mango Santamarias „Afro Blue“. Der geräuschhafte Irrsinn hat Methode, denn nicht nur in dem flächig dekonstruierten Titletrack zu frickeligem Getucker muss man das Thema meist mit der Lupe suchen. Während seine vibrierende Version von „Goodby Pork Pie Hat“ mit Joni Mitchells Lyrics Synthezier-generiert vokalisch aufgeladen wird und „Stardust“ ein spektakuläres Sax in zarter Duftigkeit erkennen lässt.
Da glaubt man Gendel endgültig seine Ironie-freie Ernsthaftigkeit bei der Verarztung großer Hits von Ellington bis Miles Davis, die er gnadenlos zu genialer Modernität aufblühen lässt. Puristen wird es grausen, alle anderen erleben eine Offenbarung von kathartischer Intensität.
