Es gibt kaum anspruchsvollere Werke für das Cello als Bachs sechste Suite und Kodálys Solosonate, die sich Matthew Zalkind für seine erste Aufnahme ausgesucht hat. Bei ersterer Komposition begnügt er sich etwas zu sehr mit Wohlklang und Präzision: das rhetorische Potenzial der Bach ̓schen Musik kommt zu kurz. Mehr liegt ihm die Extrovertiertheit von Kodálys magyarischer Muse. Die aberwitzigen Läufe des Finales gelingen ihm spektakulär, während im Mittelsatz sein samt-seidener Ton voll zur Geltung kommt. Michael Browns kurze Suite, liebevoll gestaltet, stellt ein passendes Zwischenspiel dar.
