Und warum überhaupt ein x-ter Messias?, fragt sich Hervé Niquet, und er antwortet selbst: Unter den vielen Fassungen – weit über hundert Aufnahmen –, die es von Händels Messias gibt, wählte er die sehr interessante Fassung für fünf Solisten aus dem Jahre 1754, für eine Aufführung in der Londoner Findlingsanstalt. Wenn Händel an einem Ort kam, um sein Oratorium aufführen zu lassen, standen ihm nämlich Solisten von sehr unterschiedlichem Niveau zur Verfügung. Er beeilte sich daher, seine Partitur umzuarbeiten, um den Ablauf des Messias im Zusammenhang mit der Realität und der Qualität der Sänger festzusetzen. Wenn man sich mit den verschiedenen, so entstandenen Fassungen auseinandersetzt, bemerkt man, dass z.B. Sopranarien für Altstimme umgeschrieben wurden oder eine bestimmte Bassarie um die Hälfte gekürzt – der Sänger war wohl nicht sonderlich gut. So steht man in direktem Bezug zur Realität des Produzenten Händel. Das heißt, dass ein Komponist in dieser Zeit, in der es keinerlei Urheberrechte gab, unbedingt seine Werke aufführen lassen und Gewinn erzielen musste, um von seiner Musik leben zu können. Die Idee, sein Werk nicht zu überarbeiten, um es nicht zu entstellen oder zu verunstalten, ist ganz und gar eine heutige Idee. Es gibt wohl ein Dutzend Fassungen des Messias, viele davon von Händel, andere von verschiedenen Komponisten, darunter sogar von Mozart; die von 1754 wird selten gespielt, weil sie fünf Solisten erfordert: zwei Soprane, Alt, Tenor und Bass. Der Hörer diese Albums wird also in der Londoner Atmosphäre der Findlingsanstalt vor 250 Jahren zurückgesetzt.
