In der zweiten Hälfte der Achtziger wurde Prince zum Pop-Star und verlor damit einen Teil seiner schwarzen Hörerschaft – die Alben Lovesexy (1988) und Graffiti Bridge (1989) schafften es nicht wie frühere Platten, in Amerika Platinstatus zu erreichen. Also formierte er eine neue Band, die New Power Generation, und konzentrierte sich mit dem Album Diamonds and Pearls (1991) nicht nur auf R&B- und Funk-Klänge, sondern bezog auch die Hip-Hop-Revolution mit ein – zur versierten Band gehörte auch ein Rapper namens Tony M, und die Musiker hatten auch mehr Anteil an den Songs als zuvor. Neben starken Pop-Songs wie der Dancefloor-Nummer "Gett Off", der Soulnummer "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" oder dem groovenden "Cream" stehen aber auch Tracks wie "Willing and Able" oder "Strollin'", die den Prince-Funk mit Jazzflair versehen.
