Shake Stew

Featuring an unusual line-up of two bassists, two drummers, and three horns, Austrian jazz band Shake Stew have garnered attention with an attractive, genre-bending mixture of hypnotic grooves, Afrobeat influences, atmospheric textures, rock energy, and intricate improvisation. The group, led by bassist Lukas Kranzelbinder (who also adds a guembri, a Gnawa lute, to some tracks), quickly established itself not only in its home country, but also played shows throughout Europe, Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Morocco, and Tunisia, appearing at renowned festivals in Montreal, Rochester, and Rotterdam. Before Shake Stew, Lukas Kranzelbinder, born in 1988 in Klagenfurt, Austria, had already been busy with several eclectic projects, most notably as a member of trumpeter Mario Rom's trio Interzone with drummer Herbert Pirker (since 2011), and with the surf-rock group Expressway Sketches (since 2014). The Interzone line-up provided the core for Shake Stew when the group started in 2016, adding second bassist Manuel Mayr, second drummer Niki Dolp, as well as alto saxophonist Clemens Salesny and tenor saxophonist Johannes Schleiermacher. The group's very first gig was played at the Saalfelden Jazz Festival the same year, which also resulted in the release of their debut album, The Golden Fang, on Berlin-based label Traumton. Their first studio album, Rise and Rise Again, followed in 2018, with Mathias Koch replacing Pirker; the record featured two guest appearances by prolific U.K. saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings. A laudatory profile by Die Zeit, a German newspaper of record, gave the band more exposure. With new bassist Oliver Potratz replacing Mayr, they recorded the opulent double album Gris Gris in 2019; it was voted Album of the Year by German magazine Jazz Thing and won the German Record Critics' Award in 2020. The group quickly followed up with another live recording, Alive, which collected performances from the previous few years. In 2021, Shake Stew won the German Jazz Award as the International Band of the Year. For 2022's Heat, drummer Herbert Pirker was back in the fold, replacing Koch, while alto saxophonist Astrid Wiesinger filled the spot left by Salesny, who had departed. A year later, the group won the Austrian Amadeus Award in the Jazz/World/Blues category and released their sixth album, Lila.
