Marcel Beekman

Tenor Marcel Beekman has a large and varied repertory that emphasizes Baroque and contemporary music. He has appeared on more than 65 albums, including many volumes of the Brilliant label's Bach Edition. Beekman was born on September 3, 1969, in Zwolle, Netherlands. He began singing as a boy soprano and took voice lessons. When he was eight, he gained attention with a first-place showing at a children's song festival and won a performing slot on the Netherlands' Tros television station. This led to a series of recordings singing pop songs, the first of which appeared when Beekman was ten. Switching to classical music, he took lessons from Felix Schoonenboom at the Conservatory of the Meander College in Zwolle, and he went on for further lessons with Margreet Honig in Amsterdam. Beekman began to garner invitations to appear as a choral soloist and soon in opera. Beekman is known most of all for his interpretations of German Baroque opera, but he has also sung a great deal of French, Italian, and English Baroque repertory, as well as the first Dutch opera, the pastoral Granida by Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, composed in 1605. His first classical recording -- Handel's oratorio Saul, HWV 53 -- appeared on the Naxos label in 1999. He has appeared with both leading Baroque orchestras, including Les Arts Florissants, the Orchestra of the 18th Century, and Collegium 1704, as well as many top symphony orchestras, such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and all of the major orchestras in the Netherlands. With the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he performed in a 2017 production of Louis Andriessen's Theatre of the World that was recorded and released on the Nonesuch label, earning a BBC Music Awards nomination in 2018. Many of Beekman's performances and recordings have focused on contemporary music, and he was worked with such conductors as Reinbert de Leeuw (who conducted the Andriessen performance in Los Angeles), Sylvain Cambreling, and John Adams. His 2010 recording of Calliope Tsoupaki's St. Luke Passion gained wide attention. Beekman has continued to perform and record Baroque music, and in 2021, he appeared on a Harmonia Mundi recording of Rameau's Platée, with Les Arts Florissants under the direction of William Christie.
