Marc HantaÏ

Flutist Marc Hantaï has a large catalog of recordings, both as a soloist and as a member of various Baroque chamber groups. He is also a noted educator. Hantaï was born in Paris on March 23, 1960. He is the son of artist Simon Hantaï and the brother of keyboardist Pierre Hantaï and viola da gamba player Jérôme Hantaï, with whom he has frequently performed, individually and together as a trio. Marc attended the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, where he studied with recorder player and Baroque flutist Barthold Kuijken. He graduated in 1986 with a diploma avec grand distinction. It was not long before he was finding flute spots with leading early music ensembles, and in 1991, he appeared on recordings for the first time with Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations on their recording Bach: Les Quatre Ouvertures. Hantaï continued at the Royal Conservatory as Kuijken's assistant, and in 2008, he joined the faculty of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland. Hantaï has appeared as a soloist or in chamber music groups across Europe and in several countries in the Western hemisphere and East Asia. He has performed with many of the top Baroque orchestras of the day in several countries, and he has served at one time or another as principal flutist with Les Arts Florissants, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, and Les Talens Lyriques, among many others. Hantaï has made several solo recordings, including albums of Bach's flute sonatas on the Veritas label in 1999 and on Mirare in 2018. He has also appeared on many recordings of Baroque and Classical-era chamber music with flute, including albums with both Barthold and Sigiswald Kuijken and, in 2022, an album of Haydn trios with Jérôme Hantaï and Alix Verzier. By that time, his catalog comprised some 45 recordings.
