After Didn’t It Rain, the beautiful American blue-eyed blonde releases her second solo album on the label Yep Roc. This Too Shall Light is a sublime spiritual journey produced by the indispensable Joe Henry. Amy Helm exhibits great sensitivity to folk music, to soul, to gospel and to Americana. Throughout these ten tracks, she ventures outside of her comfort zone and takes inspiration, with her producer, from the gospel album Motel Shot by Delaney & Bonnie. Far from her band Ollabelle, Helm works with many songwriters and composers. MC Taylor from Hiss Golden Messenger for This Too Shall Light or Theodore Pecchio from Chris Robinson Brotherhood on Heaven's Holding Me for the most famous ones. But the album also contains some rather eclectic covers, such as Rod Stewart’s Mandolin Wind or Allen Toussaint’s Freedom for the Stallion. You’ll listen to these recordings with even more attention when you’ll know that Amy Helm, following Henry’s advice, didn’t really familiarize herself with the titles and took only four days to record them. No vocal duplication and two takes or less on each song bring this sincerity to the interpretation of these spiritual songs. Then This Too Shall Light also has a strong personal value for the singer, because it closes with Gloryland, a unique arrangement that her father, the great Levon Helm from Band, taught her many years ago… © Clara Bismuth/Qobuz
