David Cohen
David Cohen began his musical career as a finger-pickin' folk guitarist, but his musical career changed considerably when in 1965 he met his mentor, composer/guitarist Don Peake. Cohen then became a Los Angeles studio musician, soloing on albums by Bobby Darin, Kenny Rogers, and the First Edition on styles that ranged from folk to electric, dobro and Motown.
After several years in the studio scene, Cohen spread his musical wings by playing with country and rhythm & blues bands. He majored in music at UCLA studying film scoring, arranging and orchestrating, and voice. His teacher in modal counterpoint and composition was Roy Harris. Cohen studied classical guitar with Celedonio Romero and blues with Brownie McGhee.
To assist with his classical compositions, Cohen purchased a Korg music workstation; he found the orchestral sounds disappointing, but was intrigued with the 400 built-in sounds with names like "Air Castles" and "BlueMoon." Soon he was composing for these unique voices and reorchestrating his classical compositions for these evocative new age sounds. In 1996, he released Circadian Symphony, a rhythmic yet melodic album bristling with brisk electronic sounds. Octagonal Ballet followed in mid-2000.
