Le label Verve est un label de jazz américain, aujourd'hui propriété du Groupe Universal. Fondé en 1956 par Norman Granz, il regroupe les catalogues de ses premiers labels Clef Records (1946) et Norgran Records (1953), ainsi que le catalogue sorti en licence chez Mercury. Durant les années 1950 et 1960, le label élabore une production contrastée en collaborant avec de grandes figures du jazz comme avec le déjanté Spike Jones dont il sort en 1956 le premier LP, Dinner Music For People Who Aren't Very Hungry, et plusieurs albums à succès de Shelley Berman en concert. En 1961, Granz vend Verve à MGM pour 3 millions de $. Creed Taylor, nommé producteur, reprend le gouvernail avec une approche beaucoup plus commerciale, annulant plusieurs contrats. Il introduit la bossa-nova au catalogue avec le LP « Jazz Samba » de Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd, ainsi que Getz/Gilberto. Il s'entoure de nouvelles collaborations tels que les arrangeurs Claus Ogerman (qui participera à une bonne soixantaine d'albums entre 1963 et 1967) et Oliver Nelson. Peu avant son départ de Verve en 1967, Taylor supervisa la création d'un département de musique folk (Verve Folkways, puis Verve Forecast) qui disparaîtra au début des années soixante-dix. Outre le jazz, l'axe principal de sa production, Verve a accueilli dans les années soixante une poignée d'artistes de rock, incluant Frank Zappa, The Velvet Underground, The Mothers of Invention et The Blues Project. Dans les années soixante-dix, Verve, devenu un label de Polygram, intégra dans son catalogue de jazz celui de Mercury que Philips, partenaire de Polygram, avait précédemment acquis. Depuis la fusion de Polygram avec le Groupe Seagram Universal Music en 1998, Verve Records devint The Verve Music Group, présidé par Ron Goldstein et dirigé par le producteur Tommy LiPuma. Au milieu des années 1980 et jusqu'à la fin des années 1990, le label Verve a resurgi avec de nouvelles productions et la réédition de son fonds de catalogue. Depuis 2002, il publie « Verve Remixed », une série de compilations de musique classique remixée avec de la musique électronique contemporaine.
