Et dire que certains puristes reprochèrent à Charlie Parker cette aventure d’un soir avec des violons. Trop commercial, hurlaient-ils… Mais si Bird avait économiquement vu juste (l’album rencontra un immense succès public), il était surtout artistiquement en total adéquation avec ses valeurs. Le saxophoniste insistait pour préciser qu'il tenait beaucoup à cet enregistrement avec cordes, pensant sérieusement que sa musique devait être prise au sérieux comme celle des musiciens classiques. La section de cordes lui sert ici d’écrin pour mettre en relief des improvisations toujours aussi libres et raffinées. Surtout, la poésie qui se dégage de cette musique et les cambrures luxueuses qu’il laisse entrevoir n’en font jamais un disque kitsch ou désuet, bien au contraire. Voilà un disque d’une rare beauté, produit pour Verve par Norman Granz en 1949 et 1950 et prouvant que le Dieu du bebop savait faire évoluer son art sans le diluer. © MZ/Qobuz
