Yowler
Alternating delicate acoustic folk and lusher indie rock textures, Yowler is the introspective solo project of Maryn Jones. Also known as a member of the Columbus, Ohio indie bands Saintseneca and All Dogs, Jones released her Yowler debut, The Offer, in 2016.
Maryn Jones had uploaded solo music under her own name, including an eponymous collection of self-recorded songs and a covers EP (Covers, Etc.) in the late 2000s. The latter included her sparse, lo-fi takes on acts including the Cranberries, Incubus, and the Microphones. In 2012, she released The Gift, which was recorded in Michigan and Ohio with help from recordists but maintained her hushed, raw sound. Around that time, Jones joined the expanding lineup of the Zac Little-led indie folk-rock group Saintseneca, appearing as bassist and backing vocalist on 2014's Dark Arc and 2015's Such Things, both for Anti-. In the meantime, she also led the '90s alt-rock-inspired All Dogs, which released their first album, Kicking Every Day, in 2015.
Returning to more intimate solo material as Yowler, she signed with Double Double Whammy and issued the project's full-length debut, The Offer, in 2016. Black Dog in My Path, followed on the same label in 2018, featuring production by Jones and Kyle Gilbride (Swearin'), who also played multiple instruments on the record. That year, Jones also contributed to Saintseneca's fourth LP, Pillar of Na.
