Washer
Washer are a kinetic lo-fi punk duo from Brooklyn, New York. Friends Mike Quigley (vocals, guitar) and Kieran McShane (drums) built up a cache of D.I.Y. singles and EPs, touring the East Coast underground in the mid-2010s before signing with Exploding in Sound. They released two albums in quick succession, 2016's Here Comes Washer and 2017's All Aboard. A five-year gap preceded their next outing, 2023's rousing and introspective Improved Means to Deteriorated Ends.
Formed at the tail-end of 2013 in Brooklyn, Washer quickly became a staple of the New York D.I.Y. scene with their brand of skewed, lo-fi punk. In early 2014, the duo recorded their debut EP in Quigley's parents' basement in Long Island. Produced and mixed by Nick Dooley and Dan Francia -- from fellow labelmates Flagland -- the Bighead EP was released a few months later on East Coast Basements & Bedrooms Records. Continuing with live shows throughout 2014 and supporting the likes of Sleepies, Ovlov, and Mannequin Pussy, the duo released a split single with touring partners Big Ups for Exploding in Sound. 2015 saw the pair once again partner up with Flagland's Nick Dooley to record their debut album, Here Comes Washer, at Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio's The Barn studios in Panton, Vermont. Preceded by a split single with Flagland, the album was released in January 2016. Washer struck a more introspective tone on All Aboard, their sophomore album. Released in September 2017 by Exploding in Sound, the record explored themes of self-doubt and anxiety in compact, lo-fi missives.
Aside from the 2018 single "Super Pop," the band laid low for the next several years, eventually resurfacing in early 2023 with the reflective and rousing "King Insignificant." This was followed a month later by Washer's third album, Improved Means to Deteriorated Ends. With their trademark minimalism and lyrical intensity, the duo examined the frailties and vulnerabilities of daily existence, asking big questions in tightly wound garage punk blasts.
