VRSTY
VRSTY (pronounced "varsity") is a potent and versatile N.Y.C. post-hardcore group with roots in hard rock, R&B, emo, metal, pop, and hip-hop. The band was founded in 2015 by Puerto Rican frontman Joey Varela, who spent his formative years listening to Spanish music, Usher, and Michael Jackson before a post-hardcore show headlined by From First to Last changed his sonic trajectory. Looking to merge the sultry vocal stylings of R&B with the massive riffs and breakdowns of hardcore, Varela, bassist Javy Dorrejo, drummer Chris Cody, and guitarist Paul Gregory issued a pair of well-received independent efforts, Lights and Blck Deluxe, in 2015 and 2019, respectively. VRSTY inked a deal with Spinefarm the following year and released the acclaimed Cloud City EP. Further honing their unique stylistic hybrid, Welcome Home, the band's first full-length outing for the label, appeared in 2022. Co-produced by Varela and Justin Deblieck (Ice Nine Kills, Fit for a King), 2023's Levitate saw VRSTY deliver an assured set of songs driven by chugging grooves, dynamic, danceable beats, earworm melodies, and raw, outsider conviction.
