Tipe-X

Indonesian ska band Tipe-X was formed in Jakarta in September 1995. Initially calling themselves Headmaster, the group focused on cover versions of 1990s ska hits originally by artists such as Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Voodoo Glow Skull, and others. With a name change to Tipe-X, they began to incorporate original material into their set. After building a local audience, the group played the 1995 Alternative Music Festival in Menteng, Indonesia and walked away with an award for their performance. After recording several demos and sending them to labels, Tipe-X signed a deal with the label Pops Musik, who released their debut album, Ska Phobia, in 1999. The album was a success and eventually went double platinum in Indonesia. The group’s 2001 sophomore album, Mereka Tak Pernah Mengerti, was even more successful and went triple platinum. Their next two albums - Super Surprise (2003) and Discography Hitam Putih (2005) – were critically acclaimed but weren’t as commercially successful as the first pair of releases. In 2007, the group released the compilation album The Journey, which fulfilled their contract with Pops Musik. With a new label, Tipe-X released the album Festival Perasaan in 2009. After a short hiatus, they returned with the album Seven in 2012. Another lengthy period followed, but the band returned in 2017 with the single “Cerita Tahun Lalu”, which was followed by several more singles including “Please” (2018), “Maafkan Aku (Acoustic)” (2020), and “Kisah Cinta Kamu Dan Aku” (2021). In March 2022, Tipe-X released their first live album entitled Live in Living Room.
