The Holidays

Australian indie pop band the Holidays formed in 2007 based around the songs of singer/guitarist Simon Jones. Along with high-school friend Will Magnus on synths and guitar, he was joined by bassist Alex Kortt and drummer Andrew Kerridge. Forging an offbeat pop sound that incorporated African and tropical rhythms and influences, they signed with Australian label Liberation Music in 2008 and released their first two EPs (The Holidays and When the Ship Goes Down) that same year. Faring well critically and receiving airplay at home and abroad, they spent the following year recording and producing their debut album, Post Paradise, which arrived in late 2010. With its polyrhythmic grooves and sunny hooks, the album made a good showing and was nominated for the Australian Music Prize. The rest of 2010 and 2011 were spent supporting the album, touring in Australia and playing festivals like Austin's SXSW in the U.S. and Brighton, England's the Great Escape. To write the material for their follow-up, Jones temporarily relocated to Berlin, where he began some of the initial tracks. Recorded over a three-year period at home and in various studios around the world, their second album, Real Feel, arrived in 2014 sporting a more streamlined style with elements of chillwave, dream pop, and shoegaze. Prior to the album's release, Will Magnus left the band, which continued to work as a trio.
