Stemm

Stemm is a hard-hitting American heavy metal group with roots in hardcore, rap, punk, post-grunge, and hard rock. Emerging in the late '90s, the band's early efforts leaned hard into rap-metal and hardcore. After re-tooling their lineup and signing a licensing deal with the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) in the early 2000s, the band pivoted to a more accessible, though no less aggressive active rock style, as heard on efforts like Songs for the Incurable Heart (2005), Blood Scent (2008), and Crossroads (2011). Stemm has maintained a relationship with the UFC throughout their tenure, composing the production company's theme song, "Face the Pain," and contributing songs to various other MMA (mixed martial arts)-related media ventures. The group disbanded in 2012 but became active again in 2019 and released the single "Don't Act Surprised." Founded in Niagara Falls in 1998 by Joe Cafarella (guitar, vocals), Russ Martin (bass), Jimi (drums), and Louis Penque (vocals), Stemm enjoyed considerable success within the local music scene, even playing their first show with Sevendust. Featured on several compilations and in various independently released motion pictures, Stemm recorded their debut EP, the hardcore rap-metal-leaning Further Efforts, in 1999. Following a period during which their reputation and lineup continued to grow -- guitarist Rich Spalla joined in 2000 -- they entered the studio again to record their first album. Dead to Me arrived in 2002, receiving positive reviews. Stemm also wrote the theme song for the Ultimate Fighting Championship ("Face the Pain"), thus guaranteeing their explosive sound would become an integral part of countless pay-per-view broadcasts and extreme sporting events (their music can also be heard in various video games). The group toured and self-promoted relentlessly around the country, and by 2004, their hard work had earned them an endorsement with Jägermeister (joining a family of bands including 36 Crazyfists, Chimaira, All That Remains, and Mushroomhead, among many others). Eventually, the band -- now comprised of vocalist TJ Frost, guitarists Cafarella and Spalla, bassist Steve Crowl, and drummer Dan Nelligan -- settled down for another album. The resulting Songs for the Incurable Heart, which saw the band adopt a more mainstream rock sound in the vein of Alice in Chains, Pantera, and Stone Sour, was issued in September 2006 on I Scream Records. Frost left the fold in 2007, and longtime guitarist Cafarella took on lead vocal duties. Blood Scent appeared in 2008 on the Catch-22 label, and the track "House of Cards" was chosen as the theme for a UFC television show UFC Wired. In 2012, after the release of 2011's Crossroads, Stemm performed their final show in Buffalo, appearing at Town Ballroom with a lineup that spanned all the group's different eras. Stemm reconvened in 2019 and released the brooding single "Don't Act Surprised," which coincided with the group's induction into the Niagara Falls Music Hall of Fame.
