somegirlnamedanna

Under the moniker somegirlnamedanna, Minnesota native Anna Balfany creates a quirky and sometimes effervescent blend of left-field pop that evokes contemporary artists like Lorde, but with an earnest sense of confessionalism. She made her debut in 2020. Growing up in the small farm town of Webster, Minnesota, Balfany learned to play jingles on her family's antique grand piano. From her mother she learned to love singer/songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, and Tori Amos and was drawn to write short stories and poetry at school. Her creativity eventually manifested itself in songwriting, which she pursued during her college days in Nashville, recording demos between school and bartending jobs. During that period, she landed a contract with Universal-affiliated Lava Records and using the stage name somegirlnamedanna introduced herself to audiences with the quirky electro-a cappella single "Hello I Am" in early 2020. Her debut EP, twenty one, twenty two, appeared later that year.
