Skegss

Skegss arrived on the Australian music scene around 2015 with an appealingly trashy mix of good-time surf and garage rock that soon netted them a record deal with the Warner-affiliated Ratbag label. A succession of lively singles and EPs like 50 Push Ups for a Dollar and Holiday Food helped grow their national audience ahead of their more subdued 2018 full-length debut, My Own Mess, which hit number two on the ARIA charts. Their 2021 follow-up, Rehearsal, further refined and expanded their sound, cutting out the remaining vestiges of garage rock brattiness in favor of grown-up rock swagger. Skegss formed in 2013 in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. Childhood friends Jonny Lani (drums) and Ben Reed (vocals & guitar) reconnected and began playing local shows as a duo before Noa Deane (guitar) and Toby Cregan (bass) joined the band. In 2014 the quartet released their first singles, "L.S.D." and "Rock 'n' Roll Radio," but the following year, Deane decided to leave the band in favor of his surfing career. The remaining members went on as a trio and were signed to Dune Rats' Ratbag Records in 2015. The label released Skegss' debut EP, 50 Push Ups for a Dollar, in October of that year and it hit number four on the ARIA Albums chart. In addition to the EP's strong chart performance, the band found themselves in the headlines after accusing hip-hop artists Reese and Lil Yachty of ripping off their cover art for their "Do It" collaboration. Rather than working on a full-length album, Skegss continued with the extended-play format, releasing EPs like 2016's Everyone Is Good at Something and 2017's Holiday Food, later combined into a compilation. The latter of the two EPs included the single "Got on My Skateboard," for which they filmed an accompanying video featuring the comedian Aaron Gocs. After a prolific five years of singles and EPs, Skegss made their album debut in 2018 with My Own Mess, a 15-track encapsulation of their many attributes which peaked at number two on the charts and earned them a Best Rock Album nomination at the 2019 ARIA Music Awards. A cover of Pixies' "Here Comes Your Man" for Triple J's Like a Version series comprised the band's output that year, but in 2020, they began releasing material from the forthcoming second album including the singles "Fantasising" and "Under the Thunder." Skegss' sophomore album, Rehearsal, found their lineup whittled down to a trio with the departure of Deane. Produced by Catherine Marks (PJ Harvey, the Killers) and given a bigger, more polished sound, the album appeared in March 2021 and marked their debut for the Loma Vista label.
