PVD

PVD stands for Pat Van Dyke, a producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose primary instrument, the drums, underscores his rhythmic approach. The Jersey City native's original works blend jazz, funk, and beats into quasi-electronica instrumentals with a strong retro flavor that incorporates vintage keys and acoustic instruments like horns and woodwinds. His 2005 PVD debut LP, Down for the Get Down, featured instrumentals with a stronger soul-jazz flavor. He went on to collaborate with DJ John Robinson, and the duo released the long-player All the Way Live in 2009. Still performing as PVD, he teamed with rapper 8thW1 for the Lux DeVille EP in 2010, the same year he put out an album of "original, royalty-free breakbeats" titled PVD Breaks, Vol. 1. Featuring trumpet by Rich Polatchek and woodwinds by Bryan Beninghove, the PVD LP Sounds Like This! appeared in early 2011. A year later, the drummer-composer released PVD Breaks, Vol. 2. A full-length version of Lux DeVille arrived in 2013 along with Lux DeVille: The Instrumentals, and later that year he issued Technicolor Hi-Fi as Pat Van Dyke. Van Dyke reunited with Robinson for 2014's Modern Vintage Instrumentals and followed it with the Lux DeVille Live at the Loft EP. Continuing to operate under his full name, he released Right on Time in the spring of 2015 and Technicolor Hi-Fi Remixes that summer. In September 2016, Philadelphia's Record Breakin' Music issued his Let the Horns Blow EP, four tracks of funk and beats. In between albums, Van Dyke continued to release a steady stream of one-off singles, covers, and remixes, including his September 2016 treatment of "Paper Proclamation" by Suff Daddy featuring Mayer Hawthorne. With guests including Zac Colwell (woodwinds), Peter Lin (trombone), and David Stolarz (Wurlitzer, organ), his third official solo album, Hello, Summer, arrived in 2018.
