Peter Moore
At age 18, trombonist Peter Moore became the youngest-ever member of the London Symphony Orchestra. He has made solo appearances internationally and is also an important educator.
Moore was born on January 1, 1996, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He grew up in Stalybridge, near Manchester, England. As a child, he would watch brass bands in a local park with his family and took to the trombone. His family was musical but attempted, unsuccessfully, to dissuade him from pursuing a musical career. Moore attended Chethams School of Music, studying with Philip Goodwin and Ian Bousfield, the principal trombonist of the London Symphony and later the Berlin Philharmonic. He completed his Chethams studies in 2014, and by that time, he was already experienced as a competition participant and recitalist. In 2008, he became history's youngest winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, and the same year, he made his debut recital at London's Wigmore Hal. He toured Australia in 2009 and was featured at the Slide Factory trombone festival in Rotterdam. Moore made his debut recording in 2011 with the BBC Concert Orchestra, performing Edward Gregson's Concerto for trombone, and he also recorded with the Australian ensemble Brass FX.
After several years in the London Symphony Orchestra's Young Artist Development Program, Moore was appointed co-principal trombonist of the orchestra in May of 2014, becoming the group's youngest member in its history. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Polish Chamber Orchestra (in both Poland and Germany), the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and the Northern Chamber Orchestra, among other ensembles. Moore has performed at such prestigious halls as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the Philharmonie in Cologne, Germany, and he has toured East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South America as a recitalist. He has a strong commitment to contemporary music and has given the world premieres of works by Roxanna Panufnik, Dani Howard, and Francisco Coll and the British premiere of James MacMillan's Trombone Concerto (2016). With pianist James Baillieu, he released the recital album Life Force on the Rubicon label in 2018. Moore returned on that label in 2024, performing Dani Howard's Trombone Concerto on an album of her works with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
