Obliveon

Québec, Canada's Obliveon first formed in 1987, but despite a number of demos (with original drummer Francis Giguère) the eventual lineup of Stéphane Picard (vocals/bass), Pierre Rémillard (guitar), Martin Gagné (guitar), and Alain Demers (drums), they only got around to recording their debut album From This Day Forward after signing with Active Records in 1990. Containing a top-notch blend of technical thrash and death metal, the album met with great critical acclaim, but received little to no promotional support, and went largely unheard by most metal consumers. Clearly unhappy with their label's failure in this regard, Obliveon self-released 1993's sophomore Nemesis L.P.; they then brought in vocalist Bruno Bernier prior to 1996's Cybervoid follow-up, released by Cargo Records subsidiary ASA. Yet another disappointing relationship, at least this one brought them at last to a reputable heavy metal record company, Canada's own Hypnotic Records (home of Voivod, Anvil, etc.), for 1999's Carnivore Mothermouth. But not even this association could improve Obliveon's modest commercial fortunes, and the band would end up announcing its breakup with 2002's Greatest Pits collection.
