Nemzzz

Combining an introverted nature with creative production choices -- dipping into both drill and trap -- and an easy, laid-back flow, Manchester, England rapper Nemzzz ruminates on the minutiae of relationships, social etiquette, and daily life. Born Nemiah Simms in 2004 to musically minded parents of Jamaican origin, he was raised in the Gorton area of the city. While his father sang dancehall reggae, his mother created beats of all genres, naturally providing Nemzzz with the inspiration to create his own music. He began experimenting with rap in his early teens -- regularly testing out his verse over downloaded rhythms -- before, in 2018 at the age of 14, he self-released the precocious "Youngest in Charge (Freestyle)." Further singles followed in 2019 before August's "Deep End" found support from both Officially Urban and GRM Daily. "Paranoid," "Can't Slip," and "Transparent" were issued in 2020, each reinforcing Nemzzz's unusually morose, self-analytical style, setting him apart from more boastful peers. Nemzzz's breakthrough came when October 2021's "Elevate" hit the lower reaches of the U.K. singles chart, earning him recognition from Drake, Lil Yachty, and Central Cee. Although its follow-up -- February 2022's Universal Music-backed "2MS" -- did not chart, it was an important release with a slow build in popularity that ultimately went stratospheric, accumulating over 100 million streams worldwide in the two years that followed. Nemzzz became an in-demand artist and, for the remainder of 2022, could be heard on collaborative singles with Kidwild, Rimzee, A1 x J1, and Stay Flee Get Lizzy. May 2023 saw a self-released debut EP, Nemzzz Type Beat, and that October he issued "Money and Vibes," an early preview of his inaugural mixtape, based around his inventive use of a Justin Timberlake "Rock Your Body" sample. The following month's "8AM in Manny" was a localized take on Drake's "8AM in Charlotte" and preceded "Brilliant Mind II," a collaboration with south London's Blanco. Nemzzz debut mixtape, Do Not Disturb, ultimately appeared in March 2024 and was almost immediately superseded -- only three days later -- by a deluxe edition which added features from Headie One, Lil Yachty, and K-Trap. The record took him into the Top 20 of the U.K. album chart and also performed well in Ireland, New Zealand, Portugal, and Switzerland.
