Neek Bucks

Harlem rapper Neek Bucks takes New York rap to new places, setting streetwise bars and hardened, distinctively East Coast perspectives to melodic flows and smooth instrumentals. Bucks' style took shape over the course of steadily released projects, growing from the rugged and braggadocious styles of 2014 mixtape Here for a Reason into the more refined production and storytelling lyrical content of 2023's Blessed to the Max. Neek Bucks grew up in New York and began taking rap seriously at age 15. After being grazed on the head by a stray bullet from an altercation he wasn't directly involved with in 2011, Bucks began suffering migraine headaches. Three years after catching a bullet, he finally got head x-rays which revealed he hadn't been grazed as he thought, but had actually been living with bullet shrapnel lodged in his head. The experience informed his 2014 mixtape Here for a Reason, and the rapper used his head X-rays for the tape's cover art. In these early days, Bucks' rapping style was heavily influenced by Jay-Z and other New York rap kingpins, but he grew into more diverse styles on subsequent releases like 2018's El Barrio, which explored trap rhythms and featured appearances from Dave East, Cory Gunz, and others. Bucks never completely abandoned the influence of his N.Y.C. heroes, though, even naming a 2021 album Neighborhood HOV. In 2023, new album Blessed to the Max presented Bucks at his most varied yet, with a multifaceted beat selection and guest features from 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, Raekwon, Benny the Butcher, and others.
