Mozes And The Firstborn
Playing a loopy but potent amalgam of garage, neo-psychedelia, and melodic indie rock, Dutch quartet Mozes and the Firstborn found international exposure when American indie Burger Records issued their eponymous 2014 album, greatly expanding their fan base. Over the next five years, the band continued to evolve their sound and hone their fiery live show, culminating in their more diverse third LP, 2019's Dadcore.
The group was formed in Eindhoven, Netherlands, in 2010 by vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Melle Dielesen, with Corto Blommaert on bass and Raven Aartsen on drums, and they made their debut at a house party celebrating Dielesen's 21st birthday. In 2011, Mozes and the Firstborn self-released their first recording, an EP recorded in Dielesen's home studio titled I Got Skills, and the title tune soon became a fan favorite; when the group signed with Dutch indie label TopNotch Records in 2013, their first release for the company was a single featuring a new recording of the tune.
By the time Mozes and the Firstborn had teamed up with TopNotch, the group had expanded to a quartet with the addition of guitarist Ernst-Jan van Doorn, and not long after the release of the "I Got Skills" single, the four musicians went to work on their debut album. Produced by Michel Schoots of Urban Dance Squad, the self-titled album, like most of the group's previous work, was recorded in Dielesen's studio, and it earned the band an international following when respected California-based indie label Burger Records arranged to release the album in the United States in 2014. An EP called Power Ranger appeared in 2015, followed a year later by their second album on Burger, Great Pile of Nothing. International tours followed with acts like Together PANGEA and the Growlers as Mozes and the Firstborn prepared material for their third outing, the more eclectic and polished Dadcore, which appeared in early 2019.
