Kathy & Carol

Kathy & Carol were the folk duet of Kathy Larisch and Carol McComb, who did one album of harmonized Renaissance ballads for Elektra in 1965. Though somewhat emblematic of the high, pure female vocals that were so prevalent in early-1960s folk music, there's beauty and imagination to the vocal harmonies, usually done with acoustic guitar accompaniment, and sometimes done a cappella. In Jac Holzman and Gavan Daws's book Follow the Music: The Life and High Times of Elektra Records in the Great Years of American Pop Culture, producer Paul Rothchild calls it "the most beautiful Renaissance ballad record I ever heard. It's just perfect. If you like Joan Baez, here's Joan Baez times two, with gorgeous harmony, singing purist songs like angels." Kathy & Carol never did another album, although Rothchild refers to making a second album almost a year later in the same book, claiming that the innocence of the debut LP had gone.
