Joseph Fort

As director of the Choir of King's College London, Joseph Fort is responsible for the music at the school's chapel services. He is also the college organist, a lecturer in music there, and a noted musical scholar. Fort studied at Emmanuel College at Cambridge University, where he was Organ Scholar (he attended the school on a scholarship that required him to provide organ music). He went on for further study at the Royal College of Music in London and was later named to an associateship at the school. For PhD studies, Fort moved to Harvard University, where all of his musical interests advanced. He performed on the organ at the national conventions of the American Guild of Organists and the Royal Canadian College of Organists, and he directed several Boston-area ensembles, including the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum. After joining the staff at King's College, Fort returned to Harvard in 2017 as an artist-in-residence, where he conducted several choirs. In addition to his regular work at King's College, Fort has taken on guest conducting assignments. He has appeared at the London Handel Festival, the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Festival de México, among others. He appears regularly with the Cambridge University Symphony Chorus and conducts various choirs on BBC radio. Fort's growing discography includes a 2017 recording of the English version of the Brahms Requiem, Op. 45, and in 2019, an album of the popular series of Advent Carols performed each year by the Choir of King's College London. Fort is also noted as a scholar, focusing on music different from that of his performing repertory: he is interested in the relationship between music and dance in the 18th century and plans to publish a book on Haydn's minuets. At King's College London, he lectures on various topics and also gives talks for music societies and at festivals.
