Hustlers Convention
A duo of Mike Gray and John Pearn. Mike had been a DJ for 14 years, spinning old school disco from labels such as Prelude and Salsoul, playing various gigs around Croydon, Surrey, England. He met Pearn when he was operating the lights at a local pub. They started to collaborate together, bringing samplers in for live mixes with drum machines and records. Although John did not at that time possess Mike’s experience, he quickly became a self-taught engineer, and offered megamixes and remixes for DMC. Hustlers Convention is essentially ‘Mike’s baby’, and is disco based, with samples culled from old disco records from Chic to more obscure Prelude 12-inches. A good example was the well-received Groover’s Delight EP for Stress in 1992. They also record as Greed, for Virgin Records, as a more vocal orientated group. In addition to their own output the Hustlers have also remixed for mainstream star Kenny Thomas (‘Trippin’ On Your Love’).
