Gogo Morrow

The Philadelphia-born, Los Angeles-based artist is greatly inspired by the slick, smooth, and melodic sounds of '90s R&B and emerged from under the wing of producer and B.O.E. Records owner Harmony Samuels in the early 2020s. Jasmine Morrow sang in church as a five-year-old and spent seven years -- from the age of 10 -- refining her skills at Philadelphia's Prince Music Theater. Music was ever present in her formative years and Morrow's father -- himself part of an act named Golden Chandeliers -- provided constant encouragement. After moving on from her hometown's Creative and Performing Arts High School, she completed a BA in Music Business and Performance at Millersville University. Her studies created an opportunity to intern at both Def Jam and Philadelphia International, and gaining her degree provided the option of pursuing a legal career. She opted instead to pursue performance-related endeavors and, after passing an audition in New York, joined Lady Gaga as a backing singer on her Monster Ball tour. Determined to strike out as a solo artist, Morrow made her live debut in 2013 at Philadelphia's Theatre of Living Arts. The stage name she chose was reputedly inspired by Chiaki Kuriyama's portrayal of Gogo Yubari in Quentin Tarantino's 2003 film Kill Bill: Volume 1. In 2014, she toured the east coast as a support act for both Marsha Ambrosius and Danity Kane. Subsequent years saw her perform at Roots Picnic 2016 and headline a bill curated by Red Bull Sound Select. Next, she worked on some music with Ryan Toby, formerly of the New Jersey R&B/hip hop trio City High. Toby introduced Morrow to Samuels who, in turn, invited her out to Los Angeles. On a productive first trip to the West coast she cut "In the Way," apparently nailing the vocal in one take. With the prospect of a record deal looming, she decided to move out to L.A. permanently, where she first took a job as a nanny before touring as part of Kanye West's Sunday Service Choir. In a joint deal, Samuels helped Morrow sign with Kenya Barris's Interscope-affiliated Khalabo Records in 2020, bringing the benefit and clout of Universal Music's promotion and distribution. "In the Way" finally saw release in May 2022, and was followed a couple of months later by the heartfelt "I.O.U." That October, Morrow released Ready, the first in a planned triptych of EPs. It featured guest appearances from the New Jack Swing pioneer, Teddy Riley -- formerly of Blackstreet -- and the Bay Area-born rapper Symba.
