Gaby Amarantos

Gabriela Amaral dos Santos (August 1, 1978), professionally known as Gaby Amarantos, is a Brazilian singer-songwriter, actress, and TV host. Hailing from the city of Belém in northern Brazil, she grew up in the favela of Jurunas and took her first steps as a singer at her local church. By the time she turned 15, she was already performing live at bars and music venues. Drawing inspiration from Jurunas' electronic aparelhagem soundsystem parties, as well as a wide assortment of influences that ranged from Caribbean music to Kraftwerk, she rose to fame during the early aughts as the frontwoman for the Banda Tecno Show, a key part of the city's emerging tecno brega scene. In 2011, she broke into the mainstream with a cover of "Single Ladies," earning the nickname "Amazonian Beyonce." A year later, Gaby Amarantos released her award-winning studio debut Treme, which included the hit single "Ex Mai Love," featured in the telenovela Cheias de Charme. In subsequent years, she became a host for several reality shows on prime-time TV and issued a handful of non-album singles. Purakê, her highly awaited second album, arrived in 2021 and featured guest spots by Ney Matogrosso, Elza Soares, Alcione, Dona Onete, and Liniker. In 2022, her single "O Tic Tac do Meu Coração" reached Number 123 on the Brazilian Top 200 after being used as the opening song for the soap opera Além da Ilusão.
