Eric Ferring

Tenor Eric Ferring broke through to the top levels of opera in 2021 when he made his debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera. The following year, he released his debut album, No Choice but Love: Songs of the LGBTQ+ Community. Ferring was born in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1992. He attended Dubuque Senior High School and went on to Drake University in Des Moines, majoring in vocal performance and graduating magna cum laude in 2014. He took second place that year in the Hal Leonard Vocal Competition. Ferring earned a master's degree in opera performance from the Boston Conservatory in 2016, studying with Rebecca Folsom. By that time, Ferring was already appearing in professional productions, taking roles as a Gerdine Young Artist in Opera Theatre of Saint Louis productions in the summers of 2015 and 2016. The year 2017 brought more prizes, including, crucially, three Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions District Encouragement Awards, as well as a Regional Encouragement Award from the Great Lakes Region. Ferring spent the 2017-2018 season as a resident artist at the Pittsburgh Opera, appearing in productions of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Puccini's Tosca, among others. As an Apprentice Singer at the Santa Fe Opera, he appeared as Oronte in Handel's Alcina. Ferring has taken roles from the Baroque to the contemporary era, but specialties in Handel, Mozart, and bel canto opera have emerged. During the 2018-2019 season, he was a member of the ensemble at the Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, appearing as Lurcanio in Handel's Ariodante, the High Priest in Mozart's Idomeneo, and Giuseppe in Verdi's La traviata, among other roles. Ferring bounced back from pandemic-time cancellations strongly, making his Metropolitan Opera debut as Pong in Puccini's Turandot in 2021 and following that up with appearances as Tamino in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Arturo in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, and a Royal Herald in Verdi's Don Carlos. Ferring's debut album, No Choice but Love: Songs of the LGBTQ+ Community, featured songs by Poulenc, Jake Heggie, Ben Moore, and other composers, with Madeline Slettedahl as accompanist.
