Erica Pomerance

Erica Pomerance was a player on the East Village folk scene of the early ‘60s and a regular performer at all-night hootenannies at venues like the Cafe Wha? And Cafe Bizarre. Impressed by her unrestrained, free-jazz-influenced performances and pointedly political, largely improvised lyrics, Bernard Stollman, the head of the experimental imprint ESP Disk, offered to record Pomerance at his own expense. The resulting album, YOU USED TO THINK, was cut over the course of two snowy winter nights in 1968 and is notable for its fusion of eastern ragas, free folk, and surreal, gleefully obscene poetry delivered by Pomerance herself.
