Eje Thelin

b. Eilert Ove Thelin, 9 September 1938, Jönköping, Sweden, d. 18 May 1990. Thelin was one of the strongest voices on the trombone to emerge from Europe in the 60s. His knowledge of every style of jazz helped him to develop an identity for his own groups and gave him the opportunity of playing with illustrious visitors such as George Russell. Thelin moved to Austria where he taught for five years, while still jointly leading a group with Joachim Kuhn; they both appeared on Eternal Rhythm by Don Cherry. On his return to Sweden Thelin continued to lead his own groups and obtained a government stipend for life as a leading artist. Sadly, he died in his early 50s in 1990. Thelin will be remembered as one of the most powerful trombonists in modal and free music to come from Europe.
