Capstan

Florida-based post-hardcore band Capstan mix the fury and punch of metal with the dynamics, musical complexity, and turn-on-a-dime precision of progressive rock. Lead singer Anthony DeMario has no qualms about baring his soul in his lyrics, which deliver an emotional impact that suits the intelligent assault of his bandmates' instrumental attack. Their 2016 EP Cultural Divide introduced many fans to Capstan through the popularity of the song "Wax Poetic," 2019's more polished Restless Heart, Keep Running was their debut release for Fearless Records, and 2021's Separate was a cohesive and well-crafted album written during an enforced break from touring. Capstan was formed in Orlando, Florida in 2012 by bassist and vocalist Andrew Bozymowski and guitarist Harrison Bormann. Both originally came from the Midwest and were longtime friends who had played in bands together when they were in high school. After graduating, Bormann moved to Florida to study audio engineering, while Bozymowski attended Michigan State University. In Orlando, Bormann had gotten to know vocalist Anthony DeMario, who not only came from Michigan but happened to know Bozymowski. Bormann and DeMario started writing songs together and making demos of their work, and drummer Scott Fisher was brought in to help fill out the sound. They decided to form a band and named the new project Capstan; Bozymowski left Michigan for Orlando, and the group had a bass player. In 2013, they recorded three songs for a split EP with Priorities and a seven-song EP of their own, Seasonal Depression, was issued in December 2014. In 2015, Capstan became a five-piece with the addition of guitarist Joseph Mabry, and they introduced the fuller sound of the new line-up on 2015's Parting Gifts. After self-releasing their 2016 EP Cultural Divide, which included the streaming hit "Wax Poetic," Capstan's music came to the attention of Michael Kaminsky, who managed the groups Neck Deep, Tonight Alive, and As It Is. Kaminsky was launching a new label, Adventure Cat Records, and he chose Capstan to be one of their first signings, reissuing Cultural Divide and bringing out In the Wake of Our Discord in 2018. Later the same year, the group issued a single, Haunted, and the successful independent punk label Fearless Records offered to sign Capstan. The group accepted the offer, and their first full-length album, Restless Heart, Keep Running, was issued by Fearless in September 2019. As the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020 kept the band from touring, they devoted their time to songwriting, determined to come up with an exceptionally strong set of material for their next album. After writing 24 songs, they chose the ten best, went into the studio, and recorded what they felt was their strongest album to date, 2021's Separate.
