Brett James

Brett James (born June 5, 1968) is an American country music singer, songwriter and producer based in Nashville, Tennessee. Born in Columbia, Missouri, he came very close to a completely different career path after attending medical school for a brief period in the early 1990s. He dropped out to pursue a career in music, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1995. In 1998, he partnered with producer Mark Bright to become the first and only songwriter for Bright’s publishing company Teracel Music. This opened the doors to a new role as a songwriter for other artists; Brett James went on to write hit singles for a wide array of artists in country music, such as Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride and more. He continued writing massively successful singles such as “Who I Am” by Jessica Andrews, and “Jesus, Take the Wheel” by Carrie Underwood (which earned him Brett James a Grammy win for Best Country Song in 2005). He returned to singing and recording in the early aughts, with solo songs such as “Chasing Amy” and “After All”. Brett James composed original music for the 2020 romantic comedy film Then Came You, performing the sentimental ballad “Then Came You” on the accompanying soundtrack album. Outside of country music, Brett James’s songs have been performed by artists such as Bon Jovi, the Backstreet Boys and Kelly Clarkson.
