Ada Rovatti

Italian-born tenor saxophonist Ada Rovatti is a fluent jazz improviser and composer with a style that straddles acoustic post-bop, funk, and contemporary styles. She emerged on the New York scene in the early 2000s, leading her own groups and playing in big bands. Rovatti has released a number of small group albums, many featuring her husband trumpeter Randy Brecker, including 2003's Under the Hat, 2005's Airbop, and 2014's Disguise. The couple shined a spotlight on their creative partnership with 2019's Brecker Plays Rovatti: Sacred Bond, while 2024's The Hidden World of Piloo found Rovatti collaborating with vocalists like Kurt Elling. Born in Pavia, Lombardi, Italy, Rovatti initially started on piano and took classical lessons before switching to tenor saxophone in high school. She excelled, earning a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, she studied with saxophonist George Garzone and returned often to Italy where she led her own groups and played in big bands. Following her time at school, she spent a year living in Paris, during which time she also toured Europe and Africa, before finally moving to New York City. She has played with a bevy of artists, including Miroslav Vitous, John McLaughlin, James Moody, Anne Ducros, Victor Bailey, Joanne Brackeen, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Patti Austin, and many others. As a leader, she debuted in 2003 with Under the Hat, a small group hard bop session featuring guests guitarist Mike Stern, percussionist Don Alias, and trumpeter Randy Brecker, the latter of whom she initially met in the late '90s and married in 2001. Also in 2003, she debuted her funk- and fusion-informed ensemble the Elephunk Band on For Rent and played on Brecker's Grammy-winning album 34thN Lex. Two years later, she returned with Airbop, balancing driving acoustic post-bop compositions with more funky contemporary tracks. It again featured guest appearances by Brecker and Alias, along with saxophonist Bob Mintzer and others. With 2009's Green Factor, she further expanded her sound, blending Celtic traditions with sophisticated jazz and fusion harmonies. A more traditional hard bop recording, 2014's Disguise showcased Brecker alongside pianists Leo Genovese and Oli Rockberger, bassist Janek Gwizdala, and drummer Dana Hawkins. A contemporary jazz album, Brecker Plays Rovatti: Sacred Bond, appeared in 2019 and featured vocals by the couple's daughter Stella Brecker. In 2024, Rovatti delivered her seventh album, The Hidden World of Piloo, which again found her exploring a mix of post-bop and contemporary sounds with vocalists Niki Haris, Fay Claassen, Alma Naidu, Kurt Elling, and trumpeter Brecker.
