Ballet isn't the first genre that comes to mind in connection with Ralph Vaughan Williams, even though Job -- A Masque for Dancing was the first ballet produced purely in Britain when it premiered in 1931. (Vaughan Williams disliked the term "ballet," and the work is not really a masque inasmuch as there is no speech and no singing.) It is a wonderful score, one of the most "modern" Vaughan Williams ever wrote; despite its English genesis, it bears marks of its ultimate origins in discussions about a Job ballet with Serge Diaghilev. Andrew Manze's reading with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra crackles with energy, and it is enjoyable from start to finish. The work has one of the all-time great Vaughan Williams tunes in Scene VII, "Elihu's Dance of Beauty and Youth." The other two ballets, Old King Cole (1923) and the brief The Running Set (1933) are less familiar still; they might be called rarities. Both are in a much more folkloric vein than Job, and Manze's high-energy approach is just what is needed to keep them from starting to cloy. The Liverpool Philharmonic was on something of a roll when this album appeared in 2023, but it may have reached a peak here; everything is held tightly together. With excellent sound from Onyx engineers -- working in Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall -- this is one of the major Vaughan Williams recordings of 2023, and it landed on classical best-seller charts in the summer of that year.
