Comme si le ciel était bleu horizon, Marvin Gaye et Tammi Terrell chantent main dans la main alors que l’Amérique vacille de toutes parts. La guerre du Vietnam et la lutte pour les droits civiques semblent à des années-lumière des chansons du couple fétiche de Motown. Un tandem uniquement professionnel, comme la réponde nordiste aux sudistes Otis Redding et Carla Thomas de chez Stax/Atlantic. Sur ce bien nommé United, qui s’ouvre sur le classique Ain't No Mountain High Enough composé par Ashford & Simpson, Marvin et Tammi entament un tango vocal renversant. A 22 ans, elle est une fille à (très) forte personnalité, aussi bien capable de chanter la défiance que l’amour transi. Lui, de six ans son aîné, est un partenaire complémentaire adéquat. Rien n’est téléphoné dans cette union mythique qui élève la pop soul romantique au rang d'art. Mais deux mois après la sortie du disque, le rêve vire au cauchemar : Tammi s’écroule sur scène en plein concert.
