Muscle Shoals est en Alabama, pas au Texas. Pourtant, Texas a fait le déplacement dans cette Mecque de la soul music. Plus précisément dans les mythiques studios FAME dans lesquels ont défilé Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Arthur Conley, Irma Thomas, Joe Tex, Joe Simon, Lou Rawls, Candi Staton et autres Bobbie Gentry… Avec le bien nommé The Muscle Shoals Sessions, Sharleen Spiteri et ses complices se lancent dans une relecture très « soul sudiste » de leurs plus belles chansons. Non seulement ils ont gravé ces reprises très habitées en Alabama, mais ils ont surtout convié à cette fiesta gospel une légende vivante du genre : Spooner Oldham. À 80 ans passés, le pianiste américain ayant joué pour Otis et Aretha, mais aussi Bob Dylan, Neil Young et quelques centaines d’autres, s’est assis aux côtés de la charismatique Écossaise pour plaquer, avec l’humilité qu’on lui connaît, quelques accords de pur groove. Et sur les tubesques I Don't Want A Lover ou Say What You Want, le résultat est assez convainquant. Surtout que Spiteri rappelle à qui l’aurait oublié qu’elle est avant tout une chanteuse ultra soul. À noter qu’au cœur de ce festin spirituel se cachent deux reprises goûtues : Would I Lie to You? de Charles & Eddie et Save The Last Dance For Me des Drifters. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
