There are contemporary artists that can get away with an old-time Motown soul feeling. Canadian rhythm and blues group Jacksoul is such a group. Led by singer Haydain Neale, the band offer up one soulful and delectable groove after another, beginning with the infectious "Think You Should Know" that recalls bands like the Temptations and the Four Tops, not to mention Otis Redding or Sam Cooke. Although "Getting It On" doesn't quite measure up, it's still a decent class with some occasionally quirky, high school-centered lyrics. Much better is the slower and hip-hugging "Shady Day" as Neale shines on this mid-tempo mellow ditty. The lovely soul oozing all over "Every Sunrise" is worthy of comparison to, perhaps, Luther Vandross sounding like the real deal and not some boy-band rip-off. The backing vocals and "sh-bop, sh-bop" harmonies gives it more credence also. The first disappointment is the rather bland "Love Jones," which doesn't go anywhere in terms of flow or groove. A truly low point is the opening to "Saved," which is introduced by a teenage girl saying the world is "going to crap." It's far too lightweight and relies on dropping various names to get its peaceful message across. The greatest song by far though is the gorgeous single "Still Believe in Love," which comes off as pure and as strong as anything Berry Gordy produced back in Detroit. The funky groove that kicks off "Ocean Pearl" would be a welcome addition on the album, as Jacksoul are made for tunes like this one. The same could be said for the Stevie Wonder-ish "Merry Go Round." Overall, this is a fine album with some classic Motown soul songs.
