Si la Rhapsodie sur un thème de Paganini que Rachmaninov composa en 1934 est, à juste titre, l’un de ses chefs-d’œuvre les plus joués, il en va tout différemment de sa symphonie chorale Les Cloches de 1913, alors qu’elle n’a rien moins du chef-d’œuvre. Les quatre mouvements peuvent représenter, d’une certaine manière, le parcours de la naissance à la mort – cloches d’argent du berceau, cloches du mariage, cloche des grandes alarmes, cloches mortuaires. Et le parallèle entre Les Cloches et la Rhapsodie est tout trouvé : dans les deux ouvrages, Rachmaninov intégra le thème du Dies irae ! C’est ici l’Orchestre National de Lettonie qui officie, avec au piano Vestards Šimkus qui remporta le Concours Maria Canals de Barcelone cuvée 2009.
