Le 19 octobre 1999 est un événement pour les fans d’Eurythmics : après 10 ans d’absence, le groupe sort enfin un nouvel album. Intitulé Peace, il regroupe 11 titres tous composés à 4 mains par Annie Lennox et Dave Stewart comme il se doit, et est suivi d’une tournée internationale au profit de Greenpeace et Amnesty International.
Après We too are one, un disque de qualité moindre comprenant cependant quelques perles, le duo revient avec un savoir-faire indéniable. La qualité vocale d'Annie Lennox est toujours là ainsi que la musicalité, toujours réinventée. Tout au long de ce 9ème opus, plutôt introspectif, nous avons l’impression d’accompagner 2 artistes nostalgiques qui, comme le montre la photo de la pochette signée Richard Avedon, regardent en arrière. Se demandent-ils quel est le prix de cette si importante « Paix » ?
On débute avec un clin d’œil tout en douceur sur « 17 Again » où le duo semble faire le point sur sa carrière. Il n’est pas anodin d’y entrevoir « Sweat dreams (are made of this) », leur hit international vieux de 16 ans : on prend les mêmes et on recommence, la maturité en plus. Le reste de l’album est de la même veine : inspiration soul et gospel, comme à l'accoutumée, mise en en valeur de la voix d'Annie Lennox, guitares, orchestrations élaborées et une plume affûtée.
Grâce à des ballades langoureuses (« I saved the world today » ou « Lifted ») et des titres plus rock (« I Want it all » ou « Power to meek » dont la rythmique n’est pas sans rappeler « I need a man »), Eurythmics livre un album de variétés pop de bonne facture, toujours dans l’esprit « cold soul » qui est à la base de leur travail. Les retrouvailles d’Annie Lennox et Dave Stewart sont réussies et Peace est la conclusion, que l’on peut espérer provisoire, d’une très belle collaboration artistique entre 2 artistes de talent.
