La riche discographie de Seiji Ozawa exploite essentiellement les deux derniers siècles avec une direction subtile. Après près de trente ans à la direction l’orchestre symphonique de Boston, les enregistrements chez Philips et Decca, incontournables, ne manquent pas. Dans cette riche discographie, un enregistrement mérite une attention particulière. Seiji Ozawa avait déjà enregistré l’œuvre de Carl Orff, Carmina Burana en dirigeant l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Berlin en 1987. Cette version de 1969, réédité par RCA, est avec l’orchestre Symphonique de Boston.

Le romantisme de Seiji Ozawa se marie très bien à la puissante œuvre de Carl Orff. Sans paraphraser l’œuvre, Seiji Ozawa distille la puissance de l’orchestre pour mieux mettre en avant les explosions harmoniques. Sur l’air ultra connu d’ouverture « O Fortuna », Seiji Ozawa semble contenir l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Berlin pour n’ouvrir les vannes qu’au dernier moment. L’intensité dramatique n’ en est que renforcée.

Cette interprétation dirigée par le japonais est très loin des enregistrements classiques de l’œuvre d’Orff, plus dans le figuratif et le puissant pour le puissant. Seiji Ozawa dirige avec mystère et subtilité. C’est presque à contrepoint qu’il l’oriente sur « Ecce gratum » ou sur « Rei : Swarz hie gat umbe ; Chume chum, geselle min ». La direction des chœurs est elle aussi dans cette logique de subtilité pour ne sortir les décibels que lorsque c’est incontournable.

Cet enregistrement avec Seiji Ozawa à la baguette dévoile la grandeur de ce chef, qui s’imprègne de l’œuvre sans la resservir de façon figurative. Lui qui a grandi avec les compositeurs romantiques apporte une grande subtilité à cette œuvre massive d’Orff. Difficile d’apprécier une autre interprétation après celle du japonais.
