The title Magic Mozart is not a general marketing term but a specific description of the contents of this release by Laurence Equilbey and her Insula Orchestra: the program includes works by Mozart that, broadly conceived, have magical elements. The idea is a novel one, for it encompasses both the expected choices like excerpts from Die Zauberflöte, K. 620, and more general ideas like the lost magic in a marriage. Some of the latter group, such as the arias from Le nozze di Figaro, K. 492, and Don Giovanni, K. 527, are familiar pieces, and here, the attraction is the presence of vocally gorgeous singers: Sandrine Piau, Lea Desandre, and Florian Sempey, in a rather intimate setting where they put forth their relaxed best. However, there are also some genuine rarities here that will attract listeners on their own. Even those who know of Rossini's spurious Cat Duet may not have known that Mozart wrote one too, a genuine one, for insertion in the jointly composed opera Der Stein der Weisen (The Philosopher's Stone); it's delightful and certainly fits the theme. Even more obscure is that Musik zu einer Pantomime, K. 446 (Music for a Pantomime), which survives only in a first violin part and some instructions and was reconstructed. These, too (there are several excerpts) are entrancing. Overall, these performances reflect an odd lens on Mozart that no one else has ever attempted, and the results delight.
