LCD Soundsystem avait tout pour réussir : un leader (seul membre du groupe, qui est en fait un projet solo) charismatique à souhait, à l'érudition musicale intouchable (rock, electro, punk, house), qui plus est patron du label « le plus branché du moment », DFA Records, et l'identité géo-musicalo-culturelle : New York, ses artistes branchés, et ces groupes acoquinés à James Murphy, alias LCD Soundsystem, comme The Rapture, Radio 4, TV on the Radio)...
Après le succès du hit « Losing my Edge », petite bombe dance punk teintée de house, LCD Soundsystem livrait donc ce premier opus en 2005, sûr de son art. Et pour cause, que l'on soit amateur de rock, de dance, de musiques électroniques ou de post punk, il est difficile de ne pas tomber sous le charme de ce disque haletant, extrêmement créatif. Avec cet esprit rock à forte propension dancefloor, LCD Soundsystem gratifie l'auditeur de petites perles comme les « Daft Punk is Playing at my House », « Yeah », « Give it Up » ou encore « Beat Connection », titres sortis aussi en simple avant d'étoffer cette tracklist aussi déjantée que subtile, mêlant beats percutants et mélodies efficaces. C'est d'ailleurs sur ce point que James Murphy fait fort, là que réside son talent : cette capacité à produire une musique aussi ludique et galvanisante qu'intelligente et jamais putassière. Avec ce premier album, qui précède de deux ans le non moins bon Sound of Silver, LCD Soundsytem, alias James Murphy, se faisait une place au Panthéon des artistes majeurs des années 2000.
